Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hey Kerry, Thanks for taking time to read my question. So here goes... I understand that throughout the playoffs, the relative rankings in the regular season determines which team gets home ice advantage as they move through each round. I completely understand the logic regarding this rule and it makes total sense...more points earned = home ice advantage. And with this advantage, the home team benefits by having the energizing and supportive participation of their home crowd, whereas the visiting team is disadvantaged by having 19,000 fans who desperately want them to lose. But what I dont understand is why a visiting team must automatically submit their lineups first? Obviously this knowledge provides another strategic advantage to the coaching staff of the home team. Specifically, what has the home team done to EARN receiving this information/advantage first, other than simply being the home team? My question also applies to the stick-to-the-ice requirement on faceoffs by the visiting team first. Why is this so? Wouldnt it be more fair for the teams to call head or tails on the flip of a coin for these two issues, like they do in football for the kickoff? Couldnt they flip a coin five hours before game time - one coin flip for the lineup submission, and a second flip for the faceoff stick placement? It seems that these two additional unearned benefits bestowed to the home team in the playoffs need re-examination, unless Im missing something here. Thank you very much,BillLaval, Quebec Hi Bill: The founders initiated a policy that since one team had to submit their starting lineup and playing roster first. Given that the season schedule was balanced the visiting team coach was ultimately designated in the rules as the one required to blink first! Recognizing that over the course of the regular season a team plays an equal number of games at home and on the road Rule 33.3 outlines the process as follows: It is the policy of the National Hockey League that the coach of the visiting club provide to the Official Scorer, a list of eligible players, his starting line-up and designated Captain and Alternates, within five (5) minutes of completion of the warm-up twenty (20) minutes prior to faceoff. These twenty (20) minutes gives the Official Scorer time to obtain the completed home team line-up, return it to the visiting Coach and provide a copy of both line-ups to the Referees. The Official Scorer must file a report to the Commissioner or his designate if either Coach fails to cooperate within these recommended guidelines. (Report to be forwarded to NHL Toronto office). The starting lineup is simply a one-time event during the course of a game. Matching lines against key players can become an issue throughout the entire game for the visiting team Coach since the home team has the benefit of last change. Changes on the fly can become an integral part of the strategy employed by both teams and when not executed cleanly can result in scoring opportunities. We have seen situations where the line matching process can even take place immediately following the opening puck drop whereby the visiting team might dump the puck deep and then head to the bench for a designated line change. In a playoff series that goes the full seven games, the team that won the right to host the deciding game (and it was won over the long haul and not arbitrarily bestowed) also receives the full bundle of rights associated with home ice advantage; recording starting line-up last, centre stick down last in faceoffs and most importantly, the last line change. Over the course of my career I encountered more than a few glitches with team starting lineups and rosters that were submitted prior to the game. I assessed a bench minor for the incorrect starting line-up on more than two occasions when an appeal was made prior to the next face-off by the non-offending team. I also removed players from the game once I was informed by the official scorer that those players were not listed on the roster that had been submitted by the Coach. The most bizarre situation occurred when I had to enforce rule 5.2 to take away a goal that had just been scored by a team with an ineligible player on the ice. It didnt matter that the ineligible player was not involved in the scoring but simply that he had been on the ice at the time the goal had been scored and it was brought to my attention at that stoppage of play. When I showed the Coach the copy of the roster in my back pocket he admitted that he had entrusted the team trainer with filling in the roster sheet prior to the game! Near the end of my career I had a game in Madison Square Garden and Ken Hitchcock was coaching the visiting Philadelphia Flyers. Once we added a second referee to the crew I always entrusted the starting line-up sheets to my junior partner. In other words I never put them in my pocket because every other referee was junior to me. This night I was working with Bill McCreary so he held the roster sheets. Following the national anthem, Coach Hitchcock called McCreary to the Flyer bench. I saw him take the roster sheets out of his pocket, examine them briefly and then wave me over and to the bench. Upon my arrival, McCreary attempted to hand me the sheets and said Hitch wanted to make sure he had the correct players circled for the starting lineup. I refused to take the roster sheets and told McCreary to check them himself. The more McCreary persisted in trying to hand the sheets to me the more I resisted taking them. Finally as this Keystone Cops routine went back and forth the Flyers Coach intervened and asked what the F we were doing? We admitted that neither one of us carried our reading glasses onto the ice nor could we see the fine print or the players that were circled! McCreary handed the sheets to Hitch and said who are you starting? Coach Hitchcock rolled his eyes and said, "Man, we are in trouble tonight with you two out here. Youre both F-n blind!" But as ever its the QBs that have taken the headlines. The quarterback-needy Los Angeles Rams kicked things off by trading all the way up from number 15 to take the Titans pick which they used to land Jared Goff.Just last week, the Philadelphia Eagles followed suit, moving up to number two from eighth, with the Cleveland Browns making way. Previous No1 QB picks Looking back at previous QBs to go first in the Draft The Eagles had just handed a huge-money deal out to incumbent starting quarterback Sam Bradford. Now, he has demanded an immediate trade from Philly, leaving one thing in no doubt - the Eagles needed a quarterback and they drafted Carson Wentz. Two men initially touted as back-end top ten selections, perhaps even falling into the top 20 took the first and second spotsIn an NFL era starved of genuine franchise quarterbacks, huge salaries have been dished-out to unproven and underperforming quarterbacks, such as Brock Osweiler and the aforementioned Bradford. It is just the sixth time in the Super Bowl era that quarterbacks have gone one and two respectively. Just last year, Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota were taken with the opening selections. Sky Sports Digital Mock Draft Casting our verdict from 1-31 Sky Sports takes a closer look at the two players now firmly in the spotlight.Carson Wentz Carson Wentz #11 of the North Dakota State Bison fights to recover a fumble with linebacker Jevohn Miller #55 of Iowa State A vast number of popular NFL draft scouts and analysts appear to believe that Carson Wentz is the best quarterback in this draft class.Renowned NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock recently placed him at the very top of his draft board as the best prospect available, while former NFL coach-turned-analyst Jon Gruden revealed his belief what Wentz is the most NFL-ready quarterback to enter the draft in recent years. One thing for sure is that Wentz has the prototypical size NFL scouts look for in a professional quarterback. He is 66 tall, over 230lbs and the arm-size that gives him all the tools to be a top pro-level player. His frame and athleticism is without a doubt a major strength. It is not a stretch to say that many people a little over a year ago, or even until the draft started to come into focus, did not know who Wentz was.The 23-year old played college football at North Dakota State, a school playing in the FCS - in simpler terms, essentially the second tier of college football. This has been the biggest concern as the draft has grown closer, with question marks around the level competition he faced in college, and his big game experience, so to speak. However, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, a first round pick out of FCS school Delaware in 2008, has gone on to win a Super Bowl. Spences road to redemption Noach Spence talks exclusively to Sky Sports Digital Wentz had his first year as the starting quarterback in 2014, leading North Dakota State to the FCS Championship game, where they defeated Illinois State to win their fourth consecutive title. It was a breakout year for Wentz, who excelled and caught the eye as he threw for over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns, as he started in all 16 games. He also proved an efficiency and calmness in pressurised situations.Last season was a little more difficult for him. After an excellent start to the year, Wentz broke his wrist during the week six clash with South Dakota, going on to miss the next eight games.Wentz would return as North Dakota State again reached the FCS Championship game, leading the team to another title with a win over Jacksonville State, also earning his second-conseecutive outstanding player award.ddddddddddddo, while there may be doubts over the level of competition, what cannot be questioned is Wentzs success in the FCS, where he set the schools single-season records for total yards, completions and touchdowns..In total, Wentz started 27 times for NDSU, throwing for 5,115 yards and 45 touchdowns. There is no doubt he possesses all the physical tools to excel as an NFL quarterback, but the transition to the pro-leagues and the huge step-up in competition is still a big question.Wentzs NFL comparison: Blake Bortles (Jacksonville Jaguars) NFL Draft: Offensive options View from Americas take on those who could take the eye Jared Goff Californias Jared Goff had long been considered the strongest quarterback available in this draft class, until Wentz proved himself a viable contender for that accolade. The 21-year old left California having set the schools records for touchdown passes, passing yards and completions - incidentally, the only Cal quarterback with a more efficient passing career is a certain Aaron Rodgers. And it was not just school records that Goff was setting. In 2015, while leading the team to its first eight-win campaign in six years, Goff was outstanding in setting PAC-12 Conference records for for passing yards and touchdowns in the process. Sky Sports Richard Graves chats to potential first draft pick Jared Goff about the NFL draft and his secret love for Arsenal Standing at 64, Goff also has the desired size for an NFL quarterback, but at 215lbs and smaller hands than Wentz, some questions have been raised surrounding his grip and security of the ball, although it could be argued this was something that was never a concern for him in college.Goff is a player who is calm in the pocket, and despite his smaller hand size, has proven he has a strong arm more than capable of making deep, downfield throws when they are needed. One area where Goff has the beating over Wentz is in his experience and overall productivity. Shaq Lawson exclusive The Clemson prospect talks to Sky Sports Digital While Wentz essentially had only one-and-a-half years as a starter, Goff was the main man during all three of his years at Cal, playing in a highly-competitive conference against the likes of Oregon, Stanford and USC.His numbers put up in college almost double that of Wentz - he threw for 12,195 yards and 96 touchdowns, throwing for over 3,000 yards in every one of his seasons under center.Goffs NFL comparison: Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons) Richard Graves mock draft SSN HQs man in Chicago casts his verdict Also See: Sky Live: NFL Draft Beginners guide to the draft Draft Day memorable moments Richard Graves mock draft Cheap Bills JerseysAuthentic Dolphins JerseysCheap Patriots StoreCyber Monday Jets JerseysCyber Monday Texans JerseysBlack Friday Colts JerseysCheap Jaguars JerseysCheap Titans StoreBlack Friday Broncos JerseysCheap Chiefs JerseysCheap Raiders JerseysAuthentic Chargers JerseysCheap Ravens StoreBlack Friday Steelers JerseysBlack Friday Cowboys JerseysCheap Giants StoreCheap Eagles StoreBlack Friday Redskins JerseysFalcons Jerseys OnlinePanthers Jerseys OnlineAuthentic Saints JerseysCheap Buccaneers JerseysAuthentic Cardinals JerseysBlack Friday 49ers JerseysBlack Friday Seahawks JerseysCyber Monday Rams JerseysBlack Friday Bears JerseysWholesale Lions JerseysPackers Jerseys OnlineAuthentic Vikings JerseysCyber Monday Bengals JerseysCyber Monday Browns Jerseys ' ' '
