PHILADELPHIA -- Conservative coaching, poor execution and another fourth-quarter fumble cost the Philadelphia Eagles a chance to be in first place. After wasting a 10-point lead in a 29-23 overtime loss at Dallas, the Eagles (4-3) fell two games behind the Cowboys (6-1) with another division game on the road coming up against the rested Giants (4-3). Itll be Philadelphias third straight game playing a team coming off a bye week. The turning point Sunday night in Dallas occurred with 6:34 remaining in regulation. The Eagles led 23-16 and faced a fourth-and-14 at the Cowboys 36.Coach Doug Pederson punted instead of letting Caleb Sturgis attempt a 54-yard field goal that wouldve made it a two-possession game. Sturgis already made two 55-yard field goals at the end of the first half -- the second one counted after Dallas called a timeout before the first try. Sturgis also has connected on 17 consecutive field goals.Still, Pederson chose to punt to pin the Cowboys inside the 20. But Dak Prescott drove Dallas 90 yards for the tying score.Pederson stood by his decision on Monday.Where we were in the game, we were stopping their run game, Pederson said. I was trusting my defense making them run the length of the field. If we execute better on third down, were not talking about it today. On third-and-8 from the Cowboys 30, Pederson called a screen pass to Darren Sproles. Carson Wentz dropped the shot-gun snap, linebacker Sean Lee burst through blockers and tackled Sproles for a 6-yard loss.Pederson defended the call, but blamed the loss on a missed assignment. Blocking Lee appeared to be center Jason Kelces responsibility.I would have called the same thing again, Pederson said. Its assignment football. Its one of our basic fundamental plays that weve repped the entire season in a man situation, which we got, and it just comes down to assignments. We busted one assignment and a negative play happened. We have to own up to those. It starts with me, obviously. And then each man on the team has to own up to their responsibility and make sure those negative plays dont happen again. The one regret Pederson had was declining a running-into-the-kicker penalty that wouldve given the Eagles fourth-and-1 from the Cowboys 7 in the first quarter. Pederson took the field goal instead of taking points off the board and going for it.Its the first quarter of a ballgame and it kind of sets the tone early, Pederson said. For the third time in four games, a running back fumbled in the final quarter. The Eagles were up 23-13 and had a first down at their 41 a couple minutes into the fourth when rookie Wendell Smallwood fumbled on his only carry of the game. The Cowboys got a field goal out of the ensuing drive.Pederson blamed the miscue on the offensive line.Against Detroit on Oct. 9, Ryan Mathews fumbled in the final minutes when the Eagles were running out the clock and the Lions drove for a winning field goal. Mathews fumbled again in the fourth quarter in a win against Minnesota last week. He carried only four times against the Cowboys.Weve just got to learn to finish, Pederson said.Game notes LG Allen Barbre is week to week with a left hamstring strain. The Canucks have lost five straight games and six of their last seven, leaving them in a logjam in the Pacific Division, currently sitting fifth - good for ninth in the Western Conference. (STATS) -- Since taking over the Cal Poly program in 2009, Tim Walsh has experienced his share of losses. One defeat, however, haunts him.Fresh off a second consecutive victory over a top-10 opponent and in the STATS FCS Top 25 for the first time this season, the Mustangs look to avoid a letdown and avenge last seasons loss to North Dakota in Saturdays visit to the Alerus Center.Cal Poly (3-1, 1-0 Big Sky) may have been one of the FCS more underrated teams a week ago, but it will no longer be sneaking up on anyone as the 16-ranked team. After winning 38-31 at then-No. 9 South Dakota State on Sept. 17, the Mustangs knocked off then-No. 6 Montana 42-41 in a back-and-forth-thriller last weekend. It was the third straight victory for Cal Poly since losing to Nevada of the Mountain West Conference in overtime. The FCS top rushing team each of the last two seasons is once again atop the division at 362.8 yards per game. Junior fullback Joe Protheroe is the No. 1 option, leading the FCS with 557 yards rushing -- an average of 6.0 per carry -- while quarterback Dano Graves is at 328 and 5.4. Kori Garcia has run for 285 yards and his average of 6.6 per carry is second only to teammate Kyle Lewis (145 yards, 6.9 average) among those in the FCS with at least 20 attempts. They got a number of guys that can hurt you, UND coach Bubba Schweigert said. You really cant key on one guy.Running the triple option, its no secret the Mustangs like to keep the ball on the ground, but they were still bottled up by North Dakota last season. The Fighting Hawks limited Cal Poly to 153 rushing yards on 48 attempts while scoring the games first 35 points en route to a 45-21 victory in the 2015 finale. To be honest with you, it will be a game Ill remember for the rest of my life because it was one of the worst games one of my teams has ever played was against them last year, Walsh said. I want to get that feeling out and I want to get it against North Dakota.UND (2-2, 1-0) held the Mustangs to their fewest run yards since their 2011 opener at San Diego State and 131 less than their second-worst rushing performance of 2015, which came against a much more imposing opponent in Arizona State.North Dakota is a different beast, Walsh said. They came in here and beat us up in every way a year ago. They outcoached us, they outplayed us, they outschemed us, they outdid us in every single way last time we played them. They also beat them at their own game, as John Santiago had 117 of the Fighting Hawks 219 rushing yards and scored three times.Santiago, who ran for 1,459 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2015 to receive STATS second-team All-America honors, has gained 367 on the ground this season but isnt the only back Cal Poly needs to worry about.Fellow sophomore Brady Oliveira was named the Big Sky offensive player of the week after rushing for a career-high 171 yards in last Saturdays 17-15 win at Montana State. He scored on a 60-yard run with 2:27 to play and is averaging 5.9 yards per attempt on the season. They have a great one-two punch and whoevers rolling they feel like they can play, Walsh said. We saw enough of Santiago last year and I saw enough of Oliveira this past weekend watching him play against Montana State on film, so weve got our work cut out for us.Establishing their own ground game is also a top priority for the Mustangs against a formidable North Dakota defense. The Fighting Hawks rank second in the Big Sky in rush defense, allowing an average of 113.8, and are limiting opponents to an average of 3.0 yards per carry -- 15th-best in the FCS.While Graves will repeatedly hand the ball to either Protheroe, Garcia or Lewis, or just take it himself, defenses cant ignore the pass.Graves attempted just 10 throws last week but three of them went for scores, notching TD strikes of 16, 39 and 55 yards. Five of his six TD passes on the season have been for more than 25 yards and hes averaging 12.4 yards per attempt -- the highest in the FCS among those with at least 40 attempts.Theyve added a real solid passing game to their attack, which has always been there but theyre so efficient with it, Schweigert said. This will be the Fighting Hawks 100th game at the Alerus Center, where theyre 9-3 under Schweigert. Theres really no argument against it. They have one of baseballs best records. They have baseballs strongest run differential. And its not like it came out of nowhere; they were good last year, then they improved. Its hard to imagine any team having a better chance of winning the World Series. I want to make this point clear: The Cubs are terrific. All right then. But lets take a closer look. The Cubs have been good because theyve performed well. Couldnt be simpler, right? Theres another, more hidden contributor, though. Have you happened to look at the Cubs schedule so far?I must admit, I didnt expect this post to focus on the Cubs. That wasnt my intent going in, but a trend emerged that is worth our attention. Schedule strength doesnt get talked about in baseball the way it gets talked about inn football.dddddddddddd. The samples are bigger, and the opponents tend to be more uniform. Yet baseball schedules definitely are not balanced, and its possible to look at who has benefited and who has been hurt by it. And the Cubs, so far, have had it relatively easy, while the AL West-leading Texas Rangers have not.So I set out to examine individual players, looking for the hitters and pitchers who have faced the easiest and toughest individual opponents. Which hitters have faced aces with regularity, and which hitters have faced call-ups? Which pitchers have faced sluggers, and which pitchers have faced a ton of backups? The results of my findings are fascinating enough, but youll quickly see why the Cubs became the focus. ' ' 'Jose Cruz Jr. Jersey . PAUL, Minn.
