WASHINGTON -- The Colorado Rockies called up Stephen Cardullo from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, the first time the 28-year-old infielder-outfielder has been on an active major league roster.Hours after his promotion, Cardullo was batting second and playing first base against the Washington Nationals.Cardullo hit .308 with 17 home runs and 72 RBI in 115 games for the Isotopes this season. Prior to that, he spent four years in independent ball and was the MVP of the Canadian-American Association in 2015.Anyone playing baseball, whether its independent ball or still in the minors, you have that dream, Cardullo said.Cardullo played in 2012 in the Frontier League for the Canadian-based London Rippers, a team that folded midseason. You have that hope inside your heart that you can make it to the major leagues. I think thats what everyone feels. I was just lucky enough to be given the opportunity and Im very fortunate.Cardullo played collegiately as a walk-on at Florida State University. He was selected by Arizona in the 24th round of the 2010 draft and released after two seasons of rookie ball. Its a great story of perseverance, and overcoming the odds, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.Hes earned it. I told him when he came into my office that nothing is ever given to you, that you have to earn everything to get here and hes done that and then some. Hes gone above and beyond in that department.Triple-A manager Glenallen Hill informed Cardullo of his move at an Albuquerque team meeting at which point his Isotopes teammates mobbed him. The congratulatory wishes have continued since joining the Rockies in Washington. Its his first day in the big leagues and Im sure hes already earned a lot of respect from his teammates, Weiss said. Everyone in that room knows how difficult it is to get here and you multiply by about 10 when you think of his story. The Rockies optioned infielder Ben Paulsen to Triple-A and transferred right-hander Scott Oberg to the 60-day disabled list.Paulsen hit .115 (3 for 26) with one RBI and one walk in 10 games since being recalled from Albuquerque on Aug. 12. A failure to win either of their last two World Cup qualifiers doesnt spell gloom for Australias chances of reaching Russia, according to coach Ange Postecoglou. The Socceroos emerged from a tricky away tie in Saudi Arabia and a marquee home match with Japan unbeaten, but with just two points for their efforts.Thats seen them slip from top spot in the group to second place, with just the top two assured of passage to the 2018 tournament.Saudio Arabia now top the group after a 3-0 dismissal of UAE at home, while a four-goal haul to Mohanad Abdul-Raheem ended Iraq wait for a win as they crushed Thailand 4-0.With Australia travelling to Thailand next month to complete the first half of the qualifying campaign, Postecoglou said things were on track.I said at the draw this first five-game series is where well set it up, he said. And from that perspective were in good shape.Weve got games coming up away and at home that we should win and win wellIt was important we didnt lose tonight. But right now Im pretty flat.Postecoglou can see the 1-1 draw with Japan as two points lost or one point gained.Australia failed to win at home, which is never ideal, but Mile Jedinaks 53rd minute penalty proved once more the side is capable of righting their ship in rough seas.A strong showing from 22-year-old Brad Smith - the youngest player on the pitch on Tuesday night - and goalkeeper Mat Ryan were among the chief positives. Both will return to their club sides hopeful of improving their game-time to stay in the national frame.ddddddddddddSmith has started the last six qualifiers and looks assured of his position, while Ryans form for Australia should carry him through despite stiff competition from Mitchell Langerak.Ryan hasnt played for club side Valencia in two months, while Lanagerak has played every match for his German side Stuttgart.Postecoglou said he was also keen for players to put their hands up for the troublesome right-back role - filled by Ryan McGowan against Japan - as well as other positions. Its no secret. Were still looking for the right kind of player for that role, he said. With the A-League starting theres a couple of players that have the potential to put their hand up for the November game.
